How do I get started in a running program?

I want to start running to improve my health. I am 33 and about 20 lbs overweight. I used to play sports and was fairly athletic. However, I haven’t been doing any exercise for about 15 years. What would you suggest that I do to ease myself into running for fitness.

Well first off, get out there and see how bad it is! 20 lbs isn’t bad, not a terrible place to start from at all. Go out, warm up and stretch, and go for a little jog, a mile if you can, just to see if you can do it.
You want to build up slowly, starting with short distances, a couple times a week. As you get in better shape, you can add days and miles.
Congrats on deciding to become a runner, you’re probably not as far out of shape as you think!
Runners world has a beginners program, it starts out with a run walk program and phases into running. If this link doesn’t take you to the article go to http://www.runnersworld.com
