How long should a pair of running sneakers last?

I run probably 12 miles a week in all kinds of weather, but mostly dry, and also use this pair at the gym. I’m an adult, 195 pounds. How long should running sneakers last?

    The rule of thumb is 500 miles. You should use your running shoes for running only. Ideally, you should have two pairs to switch off. I used to have two pairs – one I wore outside and one pair I wore inside on the treadmill. When the outside pair wore out, I’d make the inside pair the outdoor ones and buy a new pair for the treadmill. Ultimately, you have to make the decision when to get a new pair. Are your feet hurting at all? Are your shins aching?

    For the amount of running that you do, you should replace your running shoes at least once a year. You may also want to consider getting a pair of cross-trainers — running shoes aren’t good for strength training and they’re REALLY bad for any type of exercise that involves a lot of stop-start or changing direction quickly.

    As a cheap American, I’d like to see running shoes last forever.
    However, I replace mine once every 3 months regardless of how they look/wear. I don’t want my running shoe to get very worn. A person can have back or knee problems if the running shoe they wear is worn out.
    How long a shoe lasts, in my mind, depends on how well it is made. I suppose every shoe is a little different.
    A runner shoe could last as long as a year?

    A good pair of running sneakers should last about 6 months if you run about 25 miles a week. If you are running 12 miles a week, a good pair should last about a year.

    I’m with Ahedou…..I change to a new running shoe after 3-5 monthes.

    In your case it’s between 25 – 40 weeks.

    light to moderate built – 500 miles
    heavy built – 300 miles

    Running in old or worn out shoes can lead to an increase in running injuries. Over time running shoes lose stability and shock absorption capacity. When this happens the stress to the feet and legs increases dramatically. Over time such added stress can lead to an overuse injury

    You can check for signs of wear on the sole by placing your old shoes on a table and looking at them from behind. If the soles are worn and leaning to one side, the midsole cushioning is probably worn as well.

    You can’t tell by looking at them so I log every mile that I run by which shoe I run in. Most brands of shoes I have used last me 500 miles, although my feet felt more worn out than usual in Brooks and Saucony so I threw away my last pair of those at about 400 miles. I am 6′0", 195 and run about 1/3 inside and 2/3 outside for about 40 miles a week.

    I would not use my running shoes for any other activity, so I would get a different pair for other gym activities.

    I also alternate between two pairs of shoes. So as I wear one out and throw it away at 500 miles, I have one broken in with usually about 50 miles.

    Statistically you should change your shoes it doesn’t matter what kind it is from six months to a year or else you might get really injured.
