What indoor exercise can I substitute for running?

I have an addiction to running. I run for usually a little over an hour each day. I would run more, but it gets dark around 5 and i get home from school at 3, so time doesn’t allow. On days when I have voice lessons or other plans, however, I sometimes don’t have time to run. What indoor exercise could I do that would actually feel like a workout? I have an elyptical, but after I run on that even for 2 hours I feel like I have done nothing.

Jump rope. Lots of different routines you could do with it, and you can go as fast/ hard as you can. That and Pilates exercises for core strength. After an hour of those kinds of exercises, I feel like I just did 2 hours.
lunges are great for leg strength but the cardio work out you get from running can half-way be replaced by dancing
I don’t think that darkness necessarily should prevent you from running. OK, I admit that I am a ‘die hard’ that runs through anything. But still, I work very long hours but find time every day to run. Often I start my run before 5:00 am, or after 9:00 pm. The key is to run in safe areas with the right precautions. I use a running vest and my shoes and pants often have reflectors built in. There are also LED lights that clip on to your clothing to help you see and/or be seen. I actually prefer the morning time since there are fewer cars on the road. It is a peaceful time to run and think.
Two words. Jump Rope.
