Cross training is really good to help prevent injuries.
Running, as you’ve probably found, can be very hard on the legs because it is a high impact activity. The benefit is that it improves your cardiovascular strength significantly.
Cross training helps by providing a cardiovascular workout without all the impact of running.
Methods of cross training may include:
    Biking
    Swimming
    Elliptical
    Aerobics
    and other cardio workouts

If you are injured, cross training may be your only chance for keeping in shape.
But even if you are healthy, keeping away from the high impact for one workout a week will greatly reduce your chances of stress fractures, tendonitis, and other running injuries.

Cross training is doing different sports than your main one.

For example. you are trying to become a better runner, you might cross-train by riding a bike, swimming, or lifting weights.

    The advantages of cross training:

    1. Improves endurance, just like running
    2. Works other muscles in legs so the muscles you use when you run don’t become strong while your other muscles are weak. Balances you out.
    3. Improves different parts of the body, that help you when you run.
