Would rugby be good cross training for rowing?

Rowing is a strength endurance sport with a huge emphasis on the legs, and I feel like rugby is kind of the same way. I don’t actually know this it just seems very physical and it goes for 80 minutes. So anyway would Rugby be a good way to keep me in shape during my offseason for crew?
I used to do a lot of combat sports so Im used to getting hit on some level.

Other way around. Former world champ Rob Waddell took a break to play for Hautapu and was physically up for it but had to train harder to get back into rowing.

Not at all, rugby is an extremely physical game and it’s just going to get you injured if you’ve never played it.

    I wouldn’t advise it.

Yes it is. I used to be a competitive rower growing up in NZ and would play Rugby in the off-season. The only thing is; don’t play in a competition too serious as you can get big knocks that can make those strokes much more painful. It might be better in the backs.

Other than that it was ideal.

I think rugby would help keep your fitness levels up and could be beneficial, but my personal opinion is that rowing is actually a really good cross trainer for rugby. I rowed for a year one season and found it developed good upper body (and leg) strength as well as helping me maintain my endurance levels. I didn’t die at the first rugby training session which was a greatly appreciated first for me.

I think it would be more suitable the other way around.
If you wanted to play for the enjoyment than go for it but if u are solely looking at training and keeping fit for your rowing than there are much better options than rugby.
Id put money on you picking up atleast one injury and theres a good chance that you could do something that would put all your hardwork right out the window.

to the guy that said no he is a fucking idiot
rowing along with weight training is the best for off season stuff. all the top rugby high schools in australia here make their 1st XV squad do rowing training on the off season
