There are many doctor, professionals, academic scholars, fitness experts, etc. who have their opinion on the link between physical fitness and mental fitness.
I will give you my perspective based on experiences and other factors.
I believe that there is a direct correlation between physical fitness and mental fitness. To understand that, we have to understand that we are made up of different elements and specific aspects that could be defined by its fitness levels. Among these various fitness are: spiritual fitness, physical fitness, and mental fitness. That is why it is common to make a strong case or point by saying, "..our mind, body, and spirit."
Physical changes in our bodies initially start off with mental changes in our mind. What the mind can conceive, then we can achieve.
Now, to make changes permanent, we should incorporate the spiritual aspect which engrains positive changes as a way of life (habit).
What is the specific link? Mental fitness, physical fitness, and even spiritual fitness aligns and produces a synergy and energy within us that enables us to achieve our goals and dreams. These aspects of fitness are inter-dependent (not independent) of each other. You cannot have one without the other. Neurons in our brains create pathways that creates habits that make us a better person or a person who should be better.
