I am doing my first triathlon in 5 months and am going to start my swimming training this week. What can I get to train in and race in? I don’t want to buy something expensive just to race in. I am thinking I buy one of those wetsuits that just cover your legs up…similar to the ones the olympic athletes race in. I don’t want to train in bulky swim trunks. I suppose I could go with the speedo…although I might be slightly uncomfortable at first.

What you want all depends on where you are training and where your race is. For example: pool, lake, ocean, cold climate, warm climate.

For training (at your pool) look into jammer style instead of a speedo (if you are uncomfortable with that). Try http://www.swimoutlet.com/Mens_Jammers_s/213.htm . They have great prices for suits. If you are training at a pool in a wet suit, you will overheat very fast.

For your tri, if you are doing one in a warmish climate, I would really suggest buying a tri suit. It is really nice for a race not having to worry about extra clothing at your pit stop because if you change at your bike racks, you barely have enough room to lay out your socks, shoes, drinks, racing numbers (if you have to have a racing number just for the run/bike, buy a number belt so you don’t have to deal with safety pins http://www.trisports.com/racenumberbelt.html ). Also you don’t have to worry about clothes being shifted around by flying limbs at the start, riding up when you ride, etc. And you don’t have to peel out of a tight wet suit (very hard to do if fatigued/shaking).
You can also train for the swimming portion in this. If you are looking at not spending a lot if money try http://www.sportsbasement.com/products/C103_10308.asp or just start looking for good brands (like zoot, 2xu, orca) past year styles. You can probably find one in the 60 to 80 dollar range for a great tri suit.

However, all of this advice is temperature related so I don’t know how helpful it is going to be. Good luck on your training and plan out your race day far in advance.

I will never suggest you to buy something expensive. a normal wetsuit will be OK.
