this summer i really want to get in shape and become a better runner. i currently run a 6:10mile in track and in the fall i am doing cross country. i am also playing field hockey. we have field hockey conditioning for 4hrs every day where we do running/agility stuff for one hour, play indoor hockey, weight train, and do a video workout. i want to do xc too but conditioning is the same time
should i run by myself in the evenings?? i am afraid of overtraining and actually hurting my times. i cant really run outside during the day from 12-5 because it is super hot and sunny. i was also gonna do yoga and swimming for cross training. any suggestions on how to improve my xc times w/o overtraining? thanks!
Cross Training for a Marathon?

I am planning on starting a marathon training program soon and it has specific days of cross training. It suggests swimming, biking or running, but I’m curious… Can golf be my cross training activity? I always walk when I play, so I figured just hitting some balls in between wouldn’t spoil the walk too much. What do you think? If that’s a no go, would you say playing golf on a rest day is a bad idea? Or is that too much? I would really like to work in one round a week…

Can I do weight cross training followed by long distance running on the same day?

I have a cross training program that involves some weight. But mostly push-ups, pull-ups, and curls (bicep, tricep) and shoulder presses.
Can I perform these cross-training weight workout (about an hour long) then do a distance run (starting at 1 mile, then increasing by .5 miles a week until I’m doing 4-5 miles).
If you care, the cross training weight workouts are the P90X workouts (I love them).
My main reason to do this is to prepare for Cross Country while KEEPING (NOT BUILDING) my muscles.
Thanks.
Is it better to take a day off from running or do some cross training that day? Do i need a full day of rest?

I do cross country and every week i take sundays off. Should i be doing some cross training on this day? Or would a full day of rest be best so i can recover properly? Also, if i am supposed to cross train what are some good things to do that won’t tire me out the next day?

At my company, we’ve had several people leave our division and not replaced. Most of us are now so bogged down and swamped with just trying to do our jobs that we are fast approaching burn out and some have begun looking for employment elsewhere. Recently, our employers have announced that they will not be hiring any new employees to replace the ones who left, but instead we will all be "cross trained" to help each other absorb the extra work. Each of our jobs/divisions are so diversified and do not relate to each otehr at all. Also, the cross training will not be used to shift people into new positions (promotions) but just rather help all the work get covered. I’m so swamped with doing my job and the job of my partner (who left) that the thought of learning new skills and coving for someone else is making me crazy!! Is what my employers proposing truly "cross training" or is this just a sly way of getting around not hiring new people we desperatly need. Additional information: all of us employees are salaried so overtime is not an option and some of these "new duties" would occur outside normal working hours, and inaddition to all our current job duties. Also, we’ve been told we won’t be getting salary increases either. It this normal, or am I just overreacting? To be honest, I feel like I’m being taken advantage of.
Does Cross-Training Actually Work?

I always thought that cross-training was always effective, especially if one had an emphasis on Grappling and the other had an emphasis on Striking. However, what’s your opinion?

Many people here quite rightly point out that rank means nothing without the skills to back it up. So it’s a safe statement to make that rank doesn’t matter.
That got me to thinking about cross-training. These people are looking to acquire skills from varying arts without much focus on rank. By many of the traditional guys’ view this should be admirable. However, we often see statements about people wandering from style to style not realizing that if they stick with one they would often learn a complete system. To me that sounds like the opposite message.
I’m not pointing fingers or accusing anyone on anything, if it works for you, all the power to you. I myself have only really studied in a single art, having just dabbled in a few with friends for the sake of getting that exposure.
What are you views on cross training? Should it be supplemental to a focus on a single style? Should it be avoided. When is "right" to seek more exposure to other arts if you’ve been studying a single style? Clearly the circumstances are different for each of us and so I’m only looking for your opinions.
Cross country training questions…?

Hey, I’m a freshman in high school and finished my first season running XC in November. I took about a month off of running because my doctor told me I was at high risk for stress fractures, and then I started softball training. However, softball training at my school involves very little running, and I really want to start working NOW to get my times down for next fall’s cross country season. I have about 6 months until summer workouts with the team begin, and 8 months until competition.
Is it possible to knock off 3 or 4 minutes off my 5K time? Can anyone tell me how much I should increase my mileage each week if this week I am starting with 2.75 miles a day? Can anyone give me advice on eating, cross training, mile plans? Thanks so much!
Cross training ideas for shin splints?

I’ve been running cross country since the beginning of July and last week I got shin splints but have been running up until yesterday because that’s when they became to hard to run with. I’ve read that you have to rest, ice, massage, and cross train. Can you please give some ideas for cross training? I have to go back to practice in 5 days and need to make sure I’m not a complete mess when it starts up again. Thanks!
Also, about how long do you think it will take for them to heal? I’ve only had them for a week and they are not too bad where I can’t run at all. Again thank you.
