Why do a Triathlon? Triathlon is the fastest-growing sport in the UK and consists, as the name would suggest, of three disciplines – swimming, cycling and running. Triathlons are a great celebration of living an active, fit and healthy lifestyle, and the origins of triathlon can be traced as far back as 1920. Triathlon events come in different distances. From Sprint (swim 750m, bike 20km, run 5km) to Iron Man (swim 3.8 km, bike 180 km, run 42.2 km) It is important to note that there is a different technique required by each discipline when they are combined compared to when they are performed individually. When swimming, for example, triathletes must work their lower body less energetically than normal so as to conserve leg muscles for the vigorous workout they will subsequently receive while cycling and running. Not only that, but triathlons are usually held in open water (ie lakes, rivers and oceans) as opposed to swimming pools, and practice is important to learn different techniques such as “sighting” (lifting the head to look for course-markers) and “dolphin kicking” (diving to make headway against waves). A triathlon requires more kit than many other sports, as you need a fast bicycle, a suitable wetsuit and goggles as well as running gear. To find your local club try the British Triathlon Federation.
