Is this cross training or being taken advantage of?

At my company, we’ve had several people leave our division and not replaced. Most of us are now so bogged down and swamped with just trying to do our jobs that we are fast approaching burn out and some have begun looking for employment elsewhere. Recently, our employers have announced that they will not be hiring any new employees to replace the ones who left, but instead we will all be "cross trained" to help each other absorb the extra work. Each of our jobs/divisions are so diversified and do not relate to each otehr at all. Also, the cross training will not be used to shift people into new positions (promotions) but just rather help all the work get covered. I’m so swamped with doing my job and the job of my partner (who left) that the thought of learning new skills and coving for someone else is making me crazy!! Is what my employers proposing truly "cross training" or is this just a sly way of getting around not hiring new people we desperatly need. Additional information: all of us employees are salaried so overtime is not an option and some of these "new duties" would occur outside normal working hours, and inaddition to all our current job duties. Also, we’ve been told we won’t be getting salary increases either. It this normal, or am I just overreacting? To be honest, I feel like I’m being taken advantage of.

i am doing a presentation in crosstraining current employees instead of hiring more people and training them for specialized jobs. I need to persuade top level management that this is cost effective and more productive. The areas that i am currently going to explain are; Keys to keeping employee motivation and Retetntion, Benefits to Employer, Benefits to Employees, Benefits to Customers, Cost of hiring and training new employees, costof training current employees, cost to replace employees. I need more ideas on why getting more out of an employee is better than hiring more people. And i need any ideas to what i should add into the presentation.

For those in the air force, did you cross-train? How many job opportunities are available for cross-training? I know this is usually only offered for undermanned jobs. Or is it better to stick with one specialty?
