What would be a good running shoe to start off on?

I’ve started preparing myself for running.
Usually, I just wear my converses when I go running, but now that I am getting serious I want to invest in some actual "Running" shoes.
What is the best type or brand? Are there specific things I need to know about choosing what running shoe to purchase?
Any help would be wonderful.

What type of running shoes should I be looking at?

I run mostly outside on pavement or dirt/gravel, then occasionally on treadmills. I run about 2 to 3 miles / 6 days a week. Because I run outside should I look at trail shoes or go with a regular running shoe? Also, anyone have any suggestions on good brands to try?

How do you decide on the best cross training shoe for women?

I am looking for a real cross training shoe, not a running shoe. Is there somewhere womens sport shoes are rated for quality anf price?
