I am doing my first triathlon in 5 months and am going to start my swimming training this week. What can I get to train in and race in? I don’t want to buy something expensive just to race in. I am thinking I buy one of those wetsuits that just cover your legs up…similar to the ones the olympic athletes race in. I don’t want to train in bulky swim trunks. I suppose I could go with the speedo…although I might be slightly uncomfortable at first.

The world of athletics is changing with new hi-tech equipment like power meters and the Vasa Ergometer. Athletes can monitor their training and train more effectively than training in the pool alone. The Vasa Ergometer allows athletes to train anywhere, anytime without having to get in the water. Athletes can train more specifically, indoors, on their own schedule and may be able to get a more effective workout than swimming in the water alone. Athletes can measure average watts, force, stroke length, stroke rate, pace per 100 meters, time and distance. Benefits include daily training, fine tuning technique, performance testing, injury prevention, rehabilitation. Develop power and strength more effectively than you can in the water. Training Video: A Purposeful Push-Off
The push-off happens at the start of a length of swimming in a pool. It begins with both feet planted firmly on the pool wall and entails extending the legs dynamically to propel the body forward through the water.
Many triathletes who come into the sport with no formal swim background might feel as if pushing off the pool wall is somehow cheating. The attitude seems to be, “Well, I won’t be able to push-off in the open water segment of my upcoming triathlon so why should I do it now?” The truth is that each push-off sets the tone for the swim that follows.
