Fab video! Just discovered barefoot running myself TODAY as I’ve gone down with plantar fasciitis… after wearing new trainers with extra insoles. You have a superb manner about you and I warmed to your style and info immediately. Tthanks my friend!

Plantar Fasciitus can be a darn bother to get shifted but use the methods I showed on the other Videos and it will help, Good luck

How do you feel about Vibram Five Fingers?

  6. watzzupsport says:

I do not use them myself I have heard that for what they are a minimalist shoe the are good but I have read that A .they get hot and uncomfortable B. you seem to have to get the toe size right or otherwise the are uncomfortable. C. some reports I have read states they have had problems with heel chaff and can be uncomfortable on feet without a sock.

I’m reading Born To Run right now and am very interested in converting. I’m not a regular runner but have been doing a couple miles every other day focusing on minimizing impact on the foot strike. I ran yesterday around my yard in just socks. I loved it, but was a little worried about picking up an old nail or piece of glass. Thanks for the video. I’m new to it all. Priced FiveFingers also. Curious to learn more.

Just remember to take your time and you will enjoy the experience. In all the time I have been barefoot I have never yet stepped in dog pooh or had a puncture wound. Please head over to my blog and follow along I see comment there quicker I will be doing a series on introduction to Barefoot running

I started BF running too much too soon and came up with plantar fasciitis so its really important to not rush it. Have in mind a long term plan which could last over several months, gradually building more and more time BF. Be conservative. the longer you’ve been running with shoes, the longer its going to take for your feet to get back to normal.

Do you find that the leg irons affect your technique?

I run barefoot. I didn’t transition with socks or sandals etc – just went straight to bare. The main problem initially was the skin on my toes wearing thin against some of the rough footpath/road surfaces. Some of my first barefoot runs were around the darling-harbour foreshore. It’s only about a 2K loop – and a mix of a few different surfaces. I found myself always going for the narrow smooth tar strip along the bridge for the relief it gave my toes!
I can now run 5K on hard surfaces no probs.

  12. watzzupsport says:

Some surfaces are really hard to run on I did a 13.5k road run on the gnarliest road surface of large aggregate tar road today I should have worn my huarache style sandal. If you are wearing your toes you might want to work on your heel lift to help with that

what do you think of transitioning to a thinner soled shoe first before going straight barefoot? I’m a little bit wary of injuries and such.

  14. watzzupsport says:

I think that would be a good idea as you will need to build up to running on various surfaces unshod.
Remember going barefoot is not only just about taking your shoes off, so any wide fitting shoe without a heel will give you some sort of confidence against abrasion injury.
It is more about using proper natural running form and not relying on shoe cushioning. I would always suggest you do a lot of just walking barefoot and foot strengthening exercises before running too many K’s

    Greetings,
thanks for you video, i am a jogger and just became a barefooter, and i want to just avoid injury even that comes from running with cushoned shoes would a no-cushoned shoe give you the same results as when running barefoot? Also, you mentioned sandals, could you give me some links to good sandle designs i can either buy or make myself.

also, i would just appretiate any advice,
    thanks

I’ve started running barefoot and it feels amazing !! 3 sessions of 5 kms so far. No more lugging shoes up hills. Only 1 minor toe blister and 1 small splinter

No more achilles tendonitis. Just a great calf workout

Hey I tried to answer earlier but it did not seem to get posted, my answer would be to learn correct running technique such as the pose method and check out barefoot teds blog for sandals he has got it down for supply

  18. lulutreewoman says:

could you help me out with some thoughts on metatarstalgia? this was a problem ive had whether I run barefoot or in shoes..

  19. watzzupsport says:

@lulutreewoman what i understand is bio mechanical causes such as flattening of the forefoot or metatarsal arch are significant contributing factors, this can happen even worse in shoes when the toes are all squashed together.
I do not know how long you have been barefoot but make a point of doing specific foot strengthening training before you attempt running this could help you as the atrophy of feet in poorly fitting shoes can do a lot of damage that needs corrected
