Here’s Step #2 in our 4-step sequence for learning a fast and efficient open turn. Even if you already know how to do open turns and flip turns, this drill is fun and will help improve your breaststroke and butterfly turns.

This is deceptively simple if one isn’t comfortable being submerged face-up. Knowing the lip curling technique and being comfortable regulating air pressure helps a lot. I worked on that by pushing off face-down, then rotating more and more until I was face-up. Actually, at first I used a nose clip with it loose enough to allow me to exhale. After a short time I lost the clip but gained skill.
Can’t do a single arm turn in breast stroke or butterfly because both hands have to touch the wall simultaneously or it is a disqualification.
This isn’t just about breaststroke or butterfly. There are many swimmers who don’t do flip turns. This is a way for those people to be more effective on their walls without having to do flips.
